Before I discuss different treatments for panic attacks, does this sound familiar? One moment you’re fine and the next your heart is pounding, breathing heavily, profusely sweating, almost suffocating, like you are about to die? Are you left nauseated, dizzy and flushed? It is likely that you are having a panic attack if you have no known medical reason to experience these symptoms.

These attacks can happen without warning and can be nearly debilitating. If the attacks happen frequently medical help is often sought as this could be a panic disorder.

Two basic treatments for panic attacks are medications and psychotherapy. Panic attacks were once classified as “stress” or “nerves”, but now are now considered as a legitimate medical condition.

Psychotherapy

Counseling therapy is one way to understand and effectively cope with panic attacks. Cognitive behavioral therapy (aka CBT) is often effective for individuals with panic attacks. CBT helps to change your thinking pattern - allowing you to work through situations and thoughts that could initiate an episode. It also teaches you how to talk yourself out of an attack by utilizing breathing techniques and relaxation methods. A type of cognitive behavior therapy is what I’ve used in the past as an effective treatment for my panic attacks.

Medications

Cognitive behavioral therapies are highly effective for as long-term, permanent treatments for panic attacks, . But when the attacks are severe and frequent, one might consider medications on the onset to help control the them. There are various treatment options: serotonin inhibitors, beta blockers and benzodiazepines are typical drug forms. Each treats different types of symptoms, but all of them come with a lengthy list of potential side-effects and may cause withdrawal issues if used too long.

Aside from psychotherapy and medications there are some very effective complementary treatments for panic attacks. Do your best to live a healthy and balanced life. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, a healthy diet and performing relaxation techniques (meditation, massage therapy, aromatherapy, etc) ease stress and related anxiety. Relieving tension and generating a sense of serenity and well-being goes a long way. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and coffee which are known panic attacks inducers.

Talk to a qualified medical practitioner to find out what the best treatments for panic attacks are and what options will suit you best. And, of course, never take any medications without first consulting your physician.

Stop worrying about your next attack. If you want to start living – and be able to stop attacks in as little as 5 minutes CLICK HERE.
